Treatment Options

Alzheimer’s is a disease affecting an estimated 6.5 million Americans and there is currently no cure; however, there are several treatments that can slow the disease’s progression. Being aware is the first step.

Drug Treatments

  • Cholinesterase inhibitors: Usually, these inhibitors are the first drug-related treatment typically used for individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The medicine boosts cell-to-cell communication, allowing the brain to preserve its chemical messengers. Most users see moderate improvements with this treatment.

  • Memantine (Namenda): This medication is often used with Cholinesterase inhibitors and is typically used in more severe cases. Memantine is a receptor antagonist that works by decreasing abnormal brain activity, such as broken neuron connections.

Non-drug treatments:

  • Exercise: It is a well-known fact that exercise can improve an individual’s overall mood and health. However, it can also stimulate the brain and encourage restful sleep, both of which are vital to brain health. Exercising daily and allowing your body to rest can slow the progression of Alzheimer’s by increasing brain activity.

  • Social Engagement and Activities: Things like reading, puzzles, instrument playing, and gardening also engage the brain and encourage growth. Treating the brain like a muscle is one of the best ways to fight Alzheimer’s. Here at Aiken Memory Care, we recognize the importance of social interaction, so we constantly plan activities to keep our residents socially active.

  • Nutrition: What we choose to put into our bodies is what fuels us. Eating a variety of proteins, grains, fruits, and vegetables in appropriate portion sizes gives our brain the energy it needs to process and remember. We always strive to create and prepare menus that will encourage brain fuel and activity, giving all residents the nutrition they need.
